3 Mantras to Work By

August 6, 2007 – 4:33 pm

Too often, you see work being done that is not quite up to par.  I believe in 3 mantras that will help facilitate success:

  1. Do it well (the first time) - Put out high quality work from the beginning.  This will save you from wasting time fixing your mistake.  This will let you concentrate on continual improvements and thinking ahead versus always looking at fixing the past.
  2. Be timely - There’s something to be said to providing something when someone wants it.  Also, if you are offering something that’s the same as everyone else, you’re already late.
  3. Be authentic - If you try to be something you are not, people can see through it.  Don’t be the sleazy used car salesman.  Do your best and build up your reputation through honest hardwork.

These mantras can and should be applied to your daily work, future marketing campaigns, etc..  If you look at successful products in the marketplace today, do they satisfy these mantras?  I would guess that they all do.

Park Rangers are Marketers too

I spent the weekend on an outdoor camping trip up at Sequoia National Park.  When I checked-in to the campsite, I noticed one thing that they were doing really well.  They made it absolutely clear what their stance was in regards to bears.  Bears should behave themselves and so should the humans.  Bears and other wildlife would remain friendly and go about their business in the woods and our job as humans was to lock up all food and scent-bearing products within our designated Bear locker at all times.  If we each did our part correctly, there should be no issues during the trip.

Their messaging was quite effective because they were consistent.  Like good marketers, they had the same message on all promotional items (handouts, flyers, signage, etc.) and all of their employees knew and believed in the message they were telling their customers (campers).  The message was successful because it was direct, to the point, and created word-of-mouth buzz among the campers.

Kwik-E-Marts are Real

Seeing the Simpson’s on the big screen is long over due.  After 20 years of success on television, it’s debateable whether or not there is enough interest for blockbuster success.  The gamble to transform some select 7-11’s into Kwik-E-Marts and offer Simpson staple products such as Buzz Cola, KrustyO’s Cereal, and Squishee Slurpees is definitely creating quite the buzz (not to mention sales).  You might wonder whether after the movie, it might be wise to actually have real Kwik-E-Marts for the long term.

Selling Beckham to America

Can the paparrazi’s favorite European target make an impact in America?  Well, from the looks of it, they have a decent chance…

  1. The Beckham’s have the style, panache, and allure of any Hollywood star.
  2. The Beckham’s crave the spotlight.
  3. Timely, reality show showcasing the “true” Victoria “Posh Spice”.
  4. A soon-to-be talked about and You-tubed Beckham and Reggie Bush ad where they switch sports.

…And don’t forget all the extra MLS games and jerseys that are being swept up.  The real question is this a week or two flash in the pan or real long term interest.
